U.S. civilian base worker drowns while snorkeling in Okinawa

At 1:52 p.m. on Sept. 12, an emergency dispatch from the Okinawa Fire-Fighting Command Center reported that a male U.S. civilian base worker had been carried out to sea while snorkeling off the Ada coast of Kunigami Village. According to the Nakagusuku Coast Guard Office, the 30-something American man was transported to Okinawa Prefecture North Area Hospital in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, and his death was confirmed at 5:09 p.m.

 

According to the Nakagusuku Coast Guard Office, the man was among a group of four male and female civilian base workers who had been snorkeling, and he was carried out to sea around 1:00 p.m. He was already in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest when he was rescued about 165 meters southeast of Sedakazaki Lighthouse at around 3:45 p.m. (Slightly abridged)
