All broadcasters reported that in a trial that began at the Tokyo District Court this morning former Nissan executive Greg Kelly pleaded not guilty to charges that he conspired with Carlos Ghosn to underreport the former Nissan chairman’s remuneration. According to NHK, Kelly said at the trial: “Former chairman Ghosn was an exceptional manager and had staunchly protected the independence of Nissan. When he came to ask me about his remuneration, I told him what was legally possible and what was not after consulting with Nissan lawyers.” Meanwhile, Nissan, which is also a defendant in the trial, reportedly admitted to the charges. The network said the trial is being held via an interpreter, adding that it is taking longer than usual since every time the prosecutor reads an indictment or Kelly makes a remark, interpretation is required. The network said the trial, which began without the attendance of Ghosn, is attracting attention as it might reveal the truth about the arrest and flight of Ghosn, which sent shockwaves around the world.
