Senior DOS official calls new LDP leader Suga “extremely good choice for Japan”

NHK reported that Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Stilwell said in a telephone press conference held on Monday that the election of Suga as the new LDP president was “a very good choice for Japan,” and he looks forward to working with the next prime minister and hopes that the bilateral alliance will further deepen under Suga. The senior DOS official also reportedly expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Abe for reinforcing the bilateral alliance by saying: “Prime Minister Abe has done a great job in resolving extremely difficult issues. The United States highly praises his tenure as the longest serving prime minister.” Concerning the Senkaku islands, the Assistant Secretary reportedly reiterated the U.S. position that the islands are under Japanese administration and strongly denounced China for intensifying its activities in the area by saying: “Although the United States and Japan clarified and reinforced their position on the Senkakus, China continues its long-term intrusion.”
