PROFILE: New LDP General Council chief Sato known for coordination skills

TOKYO — Veteran Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Tsutomu Sato, appointed as chairman of the party’s General Council, is known for the coordination skills he has developed through his extensive involvement in Diet affairs.

 

A member of the LDP faction led by Finance Minister Taro Aso, Sato has served in key party and government posts such as chairman of the LDP Diet Affairs Committee, minister of internal affairs and communications, and minister for Okinawa and Northern Territories affairs.

 

The 68-year-old native of Tochigi Prefecture, eastern Japan, is known as one of the best golf players in Japan’s political circles.
