PROFILE: New LDP policy chief Shimomura versed in education policy

TOKYO —┬áSenior Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Hakubun Shimomura, tapped as chairman of the party’s Policy Research Council, is known as a staunch conservative and for being versed in education policy.


A key member of the LDP’s largest faction and an ally of outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Shimomura has served as education minister, deputy chief Cabinet secretary and chairman of the party’s Election Strategy Committee. He also led the LDP’s panel on constitutional amendment.


A native of Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, Shimomura, 66, lost his father in a traffic accident when he was in elementary school, and scholarships helped him finish school.
