TOKYO — Taimei Yamaguchi, appointed chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party’s Election Strategy Committee, strove to increase party membership as head of the Party Organization and Campaign Headquarters for five years.

A House of Representatives lawmaker with close ties with new LDP President Yoshihide Suga, Yamaguchi is now tasked with coordinating the fielding of LDP candidates in the next general election, which must be held by October next year.

A key member of an LDP faction led by Wataru Takeshita, a former reconstruction minister, Yamaguchi, a 71-year-old native of Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, is known for his frank character and enjoying drinking.
