On Sept. 15, Health Minister Katsunobu Kato announced that the central government will bear half of the public portion of the expenses of PCR tests conducted by local municipalities in the case that elderly people or people with preexisting conditions request the test even if they exhibit no symptoms. The measure aims at stopping the spread of the coronavirus and forestalling severe cases. On the same day, a cabinet decision was made to appropriate 5.1 billion yen from reserves to fund the initiative.
