DOS official to attend memorial service for Lee Teng Hui

NHK reported that the Trump administration announced on Wednesday that Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Krach will visit Taiwan to attend the memorial service for former President Lee Teng Hui on Sept. 19. The network said the senior DOS official will become the most senior State Department official to visit Taiwan since the U.S. severed  diplomatic relations with Taiwan 41 years ago, adding that the visit is apparently aimed at keeping China in check as it is increasing its pressure on Taiwan. The network reported that the State Department said in a press release that “the United States honors President Lee’s legacy by continuing our strong bonds with Taiwan and its vibrant democracy through shared political and economic values.” The network added that Krach is expected to discuss with the Taiwanese authorities establishing a new framework for economic dialogue toward increasing cooperation in the areas of semiconductors, medicine, and energy.
