Tokyo, Sept. 17 (Jiji Press)–Former Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono on Thursday called for an improvement in the working environment for Self-Defense Forces personnel despite strict budgetary constraints.

Kono switched his job from defense minister to administrative reform minister under the cabinet of new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who took office on Wednesday.

“I once said that if we’re not sure whether to buy toilet paper or the F-35, I would buy toilet paper,” Kono told senior SDF officials at a ceremony marking his departure from his previous post as defense minister.

While in the role of defense minister, Kono had been concerned about the current situation in which SDF members have been facing shortages of toilet paper and other daily necessities.

“Rather than have just one fighter jet, it’s more important to have an environment in which people can work actively. I still feel the same way,” Kono said.
