A hospital in Tokyo has become the first in the capital to specialize in treating inpatients for COVID-19.

Tokai University Tokyo Hospital recently finished renovation work for strict infection control. This includes dividing areas where protective gear is necessary from those where it is not.

The hospital has about 100 beds, all of which are to be used for patients with moderate to mild COVID-19 symptoms.

Officials say the hospital will keep providing general medical services to outpatients and medical checkups at its screening center as usual.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it plans to renovate the former Fuchu Medical Center for the Disabled through October to make it the second hospital specializing in treating COVID-19 patients.
