NHK reported this morning that the Ministry of Defense has decided to establish special electronic warfare units in six locations across Japan in the next fiscal year in order to strengthen Japan’s defense against electronic warfare. The network said the GSDF already has a special unit in Hokkaido and is planning to create a 80-strong unit in Kumamoto by the end of this fiscal year. The Defense Ministry has now decided to establish such units at six additional camps across the nation in the next fiscal year, including Camp Asaka on the border of Tokyo and Saitama. The special units will be in charge of collecting information on electromagnetic waves used by foreign airplanes and vessels that pass near Japan.
