Asahi wrote that although the GOJ is accelerating discussions on possible alternatives to the canceled Aegis Ashore deployment, there is hesitation within the LDP about the GOJ’s proposals on sea-based alternatives. The paper also claimed that some on the U.S. side have expressed reservations about the idea of building specialized ships equipped with missile defense systems, on which the GOJ is holding technical discussions with the United States, because there is no precedent for building such vessels.
