All national dailies except Asahi wrote on Sunday that Foreign Minister Motegi held talks with his Saudi Arabian counterpart in Riyadh on Saturday and confirmed mutual collaboration to defuse tensions in the Middle East and make the upcoming G-20 summit in November a success. The annual confab, to be chaired by the Saudis, will be conducted remotely this year. Motegi also visited Kuwait on Sunday to offer condolences on the recent passing of its Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

Sankei noted that during his latest foreign trip, which included a stopover in France, Motegi emphasized the Suga administration’s policy of promoting the free and open Indo-Pacific strategy, saying that the fact that Prime Minister Suga kept Motegi in his post as the nation’s top diplomat signaled the new Japanese leader’s unwavering commitment to making the region “free and open” in coordination with the U.S., Australia, India, and other multiple partners to counter China’s Belt and Road initiative.
