U.S., Japanese defense chiefs discuss alternatives to Aegis Ashore plan 

Yomiuri, Mainichi, and Sankei wrote that Defense Minister Kishi spoke by phone on Wednesday with Defense Secretary Esper for the first time since assuming his current post. Mainichi wrote that the two defense chiefs agreed to work together to study alternatives to the canceled Aegis Ashore deployment plan. Yomiuri wrote that Kishi explained Japan’s ideas for sea-based missile defense platforms as possible alternatives to Aegis Ashore and the Secretary agreed to provide technical advice. Yomiuri wrote that the two officials agreed to further strengthen the alliance between their nations, and Mainichi wrote that they discussed China’s activities in the South and East China Seas and the situation in the DPRK.
