With regard to the issue of six candidates being denied membership in the Science Council of Japan (SCJ), the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) decided to launch a project team under its Cabinet Division to discuss the nature of the SCJ. Many scholars claim that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s decision to appoint only 99 of the 105 candidates is “illegal.” The launch of the project team clearly demonstrates the LDP’s aim to deflect criticism by showing a posture of discussing the SJC’s format and membership selection process.

At an Oct. 7 press conference, LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Hakubun Shimomura pointed out that the SCJ has not submitted reports or recommendations to the government in recent years. Shimomura announced the launch of the project team, saying that he thinks there are issues [with the SCJ] and that its “activities are not visible.” (Abridged)
