Tuesday’s Mainichi wrote that the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) is looking into the procurement of drones for maritime surveillance, saying it plans to conduct a test flight of the General Atomics SeaGuardian off the coast of Tohoku and in the vicinity of Ogasawara Islands soon to check whether the U.S.-produced drone can conduct patrol operations effectively. As the JCG’s manpower and other resources have been stretched thin due to China’s active maritime operations in the East China Sea and beyond, it is reportedly anxious to tap UAVs as an alternative surveillance platform.
