NHK reported at noon that Prime Minister Suga said at a meeting of LDP executives this morning that if circumstances allow, he will travel to Vietnam and Indonesia next week in his first overseas trip since he took office. The network said the premier is making arrangements to visit the two nations for talks with his counterparts from Oct. 18 to 21. The premier reportedly said: “ASEAN is at the center of the Indo-Pacific region and the linchpin for realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific. I want to demonstrate both to the Japanese people and the world that Japan will take the lead in contributing to peace and prosperity in this region.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Motegi reportedly told the press today: “Many countries have expressed approval for realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific amid the need for international cooperation. Vietnam will host this year’s ASEAN Summit, and Indonesia is a major member of ASEAN. It will be extremely significant for the leaders of these two nations and Japan to hold in-depth and candid discussions on regional issues, challenges faced by the international community, and post-COVID-19 measures.”
