The Saturday evening editions of all national papers reported that Prime Minister Suga sent a ritual “masakaki” tree offering to Yasukuni Shrine on Saturday in commemoration of the start of a two-day semiannual festival. According to Sunday papers, the ROK government voiced “deep regret” over the offering, while China’s Xinhua News Agency expressed “strong opposition” to what it called a Japanese political leader’s “wrongheaded approach.” Monday’s papers said no cabinet ministers paid homage at Yasukuni during the autumn festival, with Nikkei speculating that they opted not to visit the shrine to ensure that the premier can play it safe on the diplomatic front initially.
