Suga starts Southeast Asian tour

All national dailies reported today that Prime Minister Suga departed yesterday on a two-nation tour of Southeast Asia, saying that he arrived in Hanoi later in the day for talks with Prime Minister Phuc today. According to the articles, the main purpose of the premier’s first overseas trip is to deepen coordination with two ASEAN members, Vietnam and Indonesia, in order to ensure that the Indo-Pacific region remains “free and open” from Chinese influence. The Japanese leader and his Vietnamese counterpart are likely to agree to open their nations’ borders to short-term business travelers.
