NHK reported that former LDP Secretary General Ishiba formally announced today that he will step down as the head of his own faction following his defeat in the LDP presidential election last month. Ishiba reportedly told the press: “I ran for the party presidency four times, and although I campaigned together with the members of the Ishiba faction in the last two races, I failed to live up to their expectations. I thought I should take responsibility.” According to the network, Ishiba said he will remain in his faction. The network said the members of the faction will hold discussions to decide on his successor and consider the possibility of having former Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita take up the post.
