Illegal fishing boats are “extremely serious problem”: CCS Kato

During a press conference on Oct. 20, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato revealed that a number of foreign fishing boats have been operating illegally in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near the rich Yamatotai fishing grounds off the coast of Noto Peninsula. He said: “They are preventing Japanese fishing boats from operating safely. It is an extremely serious problem.”

Kato also explained that the Fisheries Agency has been asking Japanese fishing boats not to enter certain areas since Sept. 30 and said, “I was told that it is unavoidable to ensure the safety of Japanese fishing vessels.” A government source said the foreign fishing boats are believed to be from China and North Korea.
