Yomiuri wrote from New York on the Trump administration’s policy of restricting the issuance of visas for foreign students, scholars, and media representatives, noting some American press outlets, including the New York Times, have raised concern that the Trump administration’s moves to step up restrictions on nonimmigrant visas ahead of the presidential election may have adverse effects on academic exchanges and the “openness” of American society. According to the daily, there have been a large number of public comments on the proposed restrictions. The Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association posted a public comment saying that resident correspondents’ reporting on U.S. politics and society “has played an important role in serving as a bridge between the two countries.”
