Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo focused on remarks made at the Diet on Wednesday by Prime Minister Suga, who reiterated the GOJ’s position of moving forward with the FRF construction off Camp Schwab. “The Henoko relocation initiative offers the only viable solution to concurrently maintaining the deterrence of the U.S.-Japan alliance and removing the danger associated with MCAS Futenma,” the premier was quoted as saying. “Keeping the installation, which has been called the most dangerous base in the world, in its current location must be avoided at all costs. Implementing the FRF construction work steadily is the fastest way to realize the reversion of Futenma Air Station.” According to Okinawa Times, Governor Tamaki dismissed the prime minister’s remarks by saying the GOJ’s narrative that the Henoko plan is the only viable option is no longer valid. “Holding serious discussions on how to move the Futenma functions out of Okinawa will make it possible to remove the danger at Futenma as early as possible.”
