Japan to construct new bona fide Aegis warships

Monday’s Nikkei claimed that the GOJ has informally decided to build two bona fide Aegis destroyers as an alternative to the canceled Aegis Ashore deployment, noting that they will be equipped with the SPY-7 radar developed by Lockheed-Martin for the ground-based missile defense platform. Funding for the construction and radar upgrade will be earmarked in the FY2021 budget. The GOJ has reportedly dismissed the idea put forward by the Defense Ministry of procuring an Aegis ship that would focus solely on missile defense on the grounds that it would be vulnerable to airborne or seaborne attacks.
