Ex-U.S. ambassador to Japan Hagerty set to win Tennessee Senate seat

William Hagerty, a former U.S. ambassador to Japan and a Republican running for a seat on the Senate, is set to win in his home state of Tennessee, local media said Tuesday.

Hagerty, endorsed by President Donald Trump, is expected to defeat Democratic opponent Marquita Bradshaw. If his win is secured, he will succeed the retiring Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Both the presidential and senate elections are currently being held in the United States, with results being closely watched both domestically and internationally.

Hagerty, who was a key member of the Trump transition team, acted as ambassador to Japan under Trump for two years from July 2017. He had fostered ties with Japan through a posting to Tokyo for three years from the late 1980s to the early 1990s while working for the Boston Consulting Group.

The businessman also served as commissioner of economic development for Tennessee from 2011 to 2015.
