Suga may be reelected unopposed if LDP wins Lower House election: LDP’s Nikai

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai remarked on a TBS CS program on the possibility that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will be reelected unopposed as the next LDP president if the LDP wins the next House of Representatives election. Nikai said that “it is likely that [Suga] will be reelected unopposed if [the LDP] wins the Lower House elections,” in the event that Lower House is dissolved and an election held prior to September 2021, when Suga’s term as LDP president expires.

Suga shared both lunch and dinner with Nikai on Nov. 12. Suga also met with Nikai on Nov. 11 at the Prime Minister’s Office [Kantei]. LDP Acting Secretary-General Motoo Hayashi was present on all three occasions.

On the evening of Nov. 12, Suga dined at a Japanese restaurant with Nikai, Hayashi, and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The Nikai side mediated between Suga and Koike.

On Nov. 12, Suga and Nikai had lunch at the Kantei at Suga’s suggestion. Nikai informed Suga that “the entire LDP will support” Suga and that Suga should “boldly lead diplomacy and domestic affairs in his own way.” Suga replied that he “will do his best.”

After the lunch, Nikai told reporters that “upon consultation [with Suga]” he will proceed with managing the LDP and the Diet. Nikai also said that he will “meet frequently” with Suga going forward.
