PM Suga, IOC Chairman Bach agree to work closely to hold Tokyo Games

All networks reported at noon that visiting IOC Chairman Bach and Prime Minister Suga met at the Kantei today, during which they agreed to work closely to achieve the goal of holding the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics as planned next summer despite the coronavirus pandemic. Suga reportedly told the IOC chief that he is committed to holding the Tokyo games to prove that humankind defeated the virus and also to demonstrate to the world that Japan has recovered from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Bach reportedly responded by saying that he shares Suga’s commitment. According to the networks, Suga explained Japan’s measures to combat the new coronavirus and the preparations being made to receive spectators from overseas. The networks said this was Bach’s first trip to Japan since the decision in March to postpone the Olympics and Paralympics by one year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
