Japan, Australia stress importance of Quad cooperation in Indo-Pacific

Nikkei wrote that Prime Minister Suga and his Australian counterpart Morrison agreed in their talks in Tokyo on Tuesday on the importance of the Quad framework of cooperation with the United States and India to enhance deterrence against China. The paper wrote that it remains to be seen whether projected President-elect Biden will uphold the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific that has been promoted by the Trump administration. The paper noted that according to an announcement by the Biden team, the projected President-elect used the phrase “secure and prosperous” rather than “free and open” to describe the Indo-Pacific during his telephone conversation with Suga on Nov. 12. The paper speculated that both Japan and Australia are planning to stress to Biden the importance of Quad security cooperation out of concern that deterrence against China would be reduced significantly if the United States reduced its commitment to the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
