At a press conference on Nov. 17, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi disclosed that he had received on Nov. 13 an interim report on the investigation outsourced to a private company into alternatives to the abandoned plan to deploy the Aegis Ashore land-based missile interception system.

According to a high-ranking Ministry of Defense official, the interim report said that installing the SPY-7 Aegis Ashore radar and missile launchers on Aegis vessels or floating offshore platforms would not present technical problems. “Based on the interim report, we will proceed with our study [into Aegis Ashore alternatives] in consultation with the U.S. government and private companies in Japan and the United States,” said Kishi.
