NHK reported that the Tokyo metropolitan government raised its coronavirus alert to the highest of four levels today, saying that experts pointed out that Tokyo has “entered a phase of rapid spread” of the virus and that Tokyo needs to be on “full alert.” The network said that during their weekly coronavirus monitoring meeting held today, experts announced that the seven-day average of the daily tally of new cases from Nov. 12 to 18 in Tokyo reached about 326, much higher than the level of around 244 recorded a week ago. The experts also reportedly explained that the number of new cases among elderly people, who are at greater risk of becoming severely ill, is on the rise, and pointed out the need to reduce chances of the elderly getting infected. Meanwhile, the network said that while the alert for the medical care system remained at the second highest level, experts pointed out the need to increase the number of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients to be able to respond to a possible surge in the number of people who need to be hospitalized and to increase the number of facilities to accommodate asymptomatic patients.
