The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association sees government support at a level “equivalent to that in Western countries and China, both in policies and in finance” as essential for them to achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050.

The Environmental Technology and Policy Committee’s Environmental Policy Subcommittee Chairman Toshihiro Mibe (Honda) was interviewed online by media outlets on Dec. 14.

Specifically, the support should include building infrastructure, such as charging stations, and maintaining and expanding subsidies to boost demand. Western countries are making “investments in clean energy on a scale of tens of trillions of yen,” said Mibe, adding that the manufacturing environment for automobiles needs to be improved as well to prevent CO2 emissions during production.
