The Saturday editions of all national papers except Asahi took up the announcement made by Foreign Minister Motegi on Friday that he will depart Japan on Jan. 4 for an eight-nation trip to Latin America and Africa. The trip is reportedly intended to strengthen economic bonds and confirm mutual cooperation for the creation of a free and open Indo-Pacific. His itinerary includes visits to Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Kenya. While he is currently also planning to visit Nigeria, this leg of the trip may be canceled depending on the COVID-19 situation because a new strain of the virus is spreading rapidly there.
