All national papers reported on the Health Ministry’s announcement last night that a woman in her 30s who arrived at Narita Airport from South Africa via Doha on Dec. 19 has tested positive for the South African strain of the novel coronavirus. She is reportedly asymptomatic. This was the first time for the new variant to be confirmed in Japan. The ministry also disclosed the detection of six additional cases of the UK variant of the virus. All of the patients arrived at Haneda Airport from the UK earlier this month and tested positive for the virus upon entry. Later analysis found that they were infected with the new strain. Only one of them is currently experiencing symptoms.
