Yomiuri carried a report on its written interview with German Defense Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer in which she said that Germany will deploy a naval vessel to the Indo-Pacific region next year. The paper interpreted her remarks as a clear statement that Germany is committed to the security of the Asian region. The daily wrote that the German defense minister cited the German vessel’s participation in naval exercises to be held in the region and German military officers being deployed on an Australian military vessel as part of activities scheduled for next year. In addition, she reportedly expressed the view that security in the Indo-Pacific region and Europe are inseparable by saying that “anything that disturbs the security [of the Indo-Pacific region] will immediately affect Europe.” The paper wrote that the German defense minister expressed Germany’s military commitment to the Indo-Pacific region out of concern that the region, which is economically important for the nation, may become unstable on account of the rise of China, adding that other European nations are also strengthening their commitment to the region.
