Mainichi reported that the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 amounted to 3,090 in Tokyo as of yesterday, saying that some 88% of beds secured for coronavirus patients were occupied. Although the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been pressing hospital operators to increase such beds by 500 to 4,000, many of them have turned down the request by saying that sparing additional resources for COVID-19 treatment would come at the cost of endangering the lives of non-COVID-19 patients in serious condition.

Asahi ran a similar story, adding that as many as 3,000 COVID-19 patients in the nation’s capital have not been admitted to hospitals due to a shortage of beds.
