Tokyo, Jan. 12 (Jiji Press)–Japan and Chile exchanged a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to enhance cooperation in the information and communication technology field, Japan’s communications ministry said.

Previously, Japan helped Chile adopt a Japanese format for terrestrial digital broadcasting. The two countries will expand areas of cooperation to include 5G advanced wireless technology and undersea cables.

Japanese communications minister Ryota Takeda and his Chilean counterpart, Gloria Hutt, signed the memorandum in an online event.

The Japanese ministry aims to help NEC Corp. <6701> win a contract in a competitive bidding, possibly next year, for an undersea cable project between Chile and Australia.
