Prime Minister Suga’s plan to visit U.S. in February looking increasingly unfeasible

Asahi wrote that it is becoming increasingly uncertain when Prime Minister Suga will be able to visit Washington after the Biden administration’s launch on Jan. 20 despite his eagerness to do so at an early date. The paper wrote that the spread of new COVID-19 variants and declining support for his Cabinet are affecting Suga’s plan. A source close to Suga was quoted as saying that although the prime minister may be hoping to achieve a breakthrough by holding a summit meeting with the U.S. leader, the situation surrounding him is unlikely to improve easily. Another source indicated the possibility of holding a U.S.-Japan summit online.
