The Ginoza Village Council (Mikiya Ishikawa, chairperson) held an extraordinary meeting on Jan. 20 and unanimously approved a resolution and written opinion that request the closure of three Camp Hansen heliports located close to civilian areas. The resolution is addressed to the U.S. Ambassador to Japan and others in the U.S., and the written opinion is addressed to the Prime Minister and others in Japan.
The resolution and the written opinion point out that the Ginoza Village Council has stressed that villagers’ lives have been disrupted by the U.S. military training and yet the situation has seen no improvement. The documents note that low-altitude flight exercises and flights after 11 p.m. have been observed from the end of 2020 to the beginning of 2021, and they request a comprehensive review of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement and the suspension of U.S. military aircraft exercises at night and outside military bases.
