Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo highlighted remarks made to the press on Tuesday by Defense Minister Kishi on an alleged secret agreement between the GSDF and the USMC on stationing a Japanese amphibious unit at Camp Schwab. “We have no plans to deploy such a unit through arranging the joint use of Camp Schwab,” the defense chief was quoted as saying. He reportedly went on to say that joint use of a U.S. installation is a matter that has to be decided by Cabinet members. The papers also took up Governor Tamaki’s response to the allegation, quoting him as saying to prefectural assembly members yesterday: “The deployment of additional SDF troops through joint use would end up forcing local residents to take on an extra burden. They would not approve of such an idea.”
