All networks reported at noon that IOC Chairman Bach reiterated his commitment to holding the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics as planned in the summer, quoting him as saying: “Our job is to organize the Games and not to cancel them.” In a news conference after the IOC’s first executive board meeting of the year online on Wednesday, Bach also reportedly said that speculation about canceling or postponing the Tokyo Games is “hurting the athletes in their preparation” and said that it would be impossible to cancel the Games, postpone them to 2032, or hold them in another city. NHK also said that Bach stressed that the IOC is fully focused on the opening ceremony on July 23. Meanwhile, Fuji TV said Bach refrained from making a clear statement about whether to allow spectators at venues by saying that he is focused on organizing a safe and fair Olympics. The network said President Mori of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games will hold an online conference with IOC Chairman Bach later today to reaffirm close cooperation toward holding the Tokyo Games as planned.
