All networks reported at noon that the GOJ has decided to ask an advisory committee comprising experts specializing in infectious diseases on Tuesday whether the state of emergency should be extended beyond Feb. 7. Noting that the healthcare system in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Kansai region remain strained, the networks reported that the GOJ is making arrangements to extend the state of emergency for about a month. NTV reported that the GOJ is considering extending the state of emergency until March 7, quoting a senior member of the administration as saying: “Nobody thinks the state of emergency shouldn’t be extended. Our basic plan is to extend it by one month to March 7.” Meanwhile, the networks reported that the GOJ is considering lifting the state of emergency for Tochigi Prefecture, since the prefecture is seeing a decline in the number of new cases and improvements in the healthcare situation. NTV reported that some members of the GOJ also believe that the state of emergency should be lifted for Aichi and Gifu.
