Tokyo, Feb. 1 (Jiji Press)–New automobile sales in Japan in January grew 6.8 pct from a year earlier to 384,442 units, up for the fourth consecutive month, industry data showed on Monday

Of the total, minivehicles accounted for 147,850 units, up 6.6 pct, and other vehicles for 236,592 units, up 6.8 pct, according to the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association and the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

The growth appears to represent a rebound from sluggish sales a year before, following the October 2019 consumption tax hike.

It remains uncertain how far new automobile sales will be affected by the lingering coronavirus pandemic and production cuts by major automakers due to shortages of semiconductors.

The declaration of a fresh state of emergency over the pandemic in Japan in January had only a limited impact on the sales figures.

But the industry is wary that a fall in the number of visitors to auto dealers could affect sales figures for February or later.
