During a press conference on Jan. 29, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi announced that a Japan-UK Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting (2+2) will be held via videoconference on Feb. 3. This is the first 2+2 meeting the two nations have held since December 2017 and the fourth 2+2 meeting ever. The agenda for the upcoming meeting is expected to include cooperation to maintain and strengthen the “free and open Indo-Pacific” and deployment of the British aircraft carrier “Queen Elizabeth” to the East Asian region.

“Japan-UK ties have a long history and tradition, and the meeting will be an opportunity to show that our relationship is becoming even closer,” said the defense minister. “We want to further strengthen our defense cooperation,” he stressed.
