It was learned from Fukuoka City on Jan. 29 that benzene and lead in amounts exceeding reference values under the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act have been detected in the soil on the grounds of Fukuoka Airport (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka). MLIT’s West Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, which conducted the survey, suspects a fuel pipeline abandoned on the site, which previously belonged to a U.S. military base, is the source of the substances.
