All national papers reported that the Defense Ministry filed a protest with the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo yesterday concerning the description in a document that the ROK Defense Ministry released on the same day of the 2018 incident in which a South Korean warship shined its fire-control radar on an MSDF patrol plane near the Liancourt Rocks (Takeshima) in the Sea of Japan. While calling the incident an “intimidating near-miss flight by Japanese patrol aircraft,” the South Korean defense white paper said the bilateral relations ran into difficulties as a result of Japan’s “unilateral and erroneous narrative.” In lodging a strong protest, the GOJ said the description of the sovereignty of Takeshima runs counter to Japan’s position.
