Japan asks U.S. to extend the current level of host nation support

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said during a press conference on Feb. 3 that the Japanese and the U.S. governments held working-level talks on Japan’s share of the cost of stationing U.S. troops in Japan (the so-called consideration budget) after fiscal 2021 and beyond by videoconference. The Japanese representatives are believed to have approached their U.S. counterparts with a proposal to tentatively extend the current level for one or two years.

The talks, the first since the start of the Biden administration, took place on the evening of Feb. 2 Japan Standard Time.
