The Saturday editions of all national dailies wrote that the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca announced on Friday that it has formally filed a request with Japan’s Health Ministry for approval of its novel coronavirus vaccine, making it the second drug maker to do so after Pfizer. AstraZeneca is seeking “fast-track” approval, and the ministry is expected to make a decision on the approval in March or later. The GOJ reached an agreement with AstraZeneca in December 2020 that the company will provide 120 million doses to Japan, 90 million of which will be produced in Japan. Since AstraZeneca’s vaccine does not need to be stored and transported at subzero temperatures, it is easier to handle than Pfizer’s.
