Monday’s Asahi and Mainichi wrote that incumbent Urasoe Mayor Matsumoto, who is backed by the LDP and the Komeito Party and supports the plan to relocate the functions of the Naha Military Port to Urasoe, won his third term in an election on Sunday by defeating former Urasoe city assembly member Irei, who is backed by political parties that support Governor Tamaki and is opposed to the relocation plan. Asahi speculated that Matsumoto’s victory came as a relief to the Suga administration following the defeat of an LDP-backed candidate in the Miyakojima mayoral election in January, and will likely expedite the implementation of the relocation plan.
