All national papers reported on Administrative Reform Minister Kono’s announcement last night that the vaccination against COVID-19 of some 40,000 doctors and nurses at 100 hospitals nationwide will begin on Wednesday and be completed by the end of next week. The first tranche of some 320,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine will be used for the initial rollout. In a bid to ascertain the product’s efficacy and safety, the GOJ will ask half of the 40,000 healthcare workers to keep a log of their health condition for seven weeks following inoculation.
Kono suggested that the vaccine may be rolled out for 3.7 million additional healthcare workers later this month, a week or two earlier than originally planned. The second batch of Pfizer vaccines will be delivered to Japan from Belgium next week.
