Ryukyu Shimpo reported on the finding that the U.S. military is planning to relocate graves from MCAS Futenma to meet “operational requirements,” saying that the Okinawa Defense Bureau reached out to a commercial firm last July to prepare a cost estimate for the relocation so as to pay due compensation to the owners of the graves. According to the daily, a total of 12 graveyards are scattered throughout the installation and the owners and their relatives are permitted to visit the graves every spring. The base authorities reportedly told the daily that any questions regarding the matter should be directed to the defense bureau, which said the details, such as the sites of the relocation of the graves, cannot be disclosed at this time. The paper speculated that the relocation may be related to facility construction or consolidation.
